A Biblical Perspective on Current Events

Bishop A. Wilson Phillips

“The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord's; but the earth He has given to the children of men.”
(Psalm 115:16)

"Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other."
(Isa. 45:22)

The Battle To Govern Planet Earth

March 13, 2002

The covenant keeping God of the Bible spoke in times past through His prophets and apostles concerning the government of His planet earth. Scripture simply says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness” (Gen. 1:1; Ps. 24:1a). From the time of God’s created son, Adam, until the time of His generated Son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, wars have been fought over who will govern planet earth. Today, in our modern world, wars are still being fought over the right to govern God’s planet earth.

Today, many world leaders make professions of their belief in certain deities, gods, or philosophies of life. Some are atheistic and some are agnostic. In any case, all world leaders have some confidence in their political military and economic power to govern in their sphere of rule or government. Whether one governs in a dictatorship, republic, parliament, or some form of democracy, they are dependent upon their military and economic strength to govern.

As an American, a believer in the covenant keeping God of the Bible, and a joint heir with Jesus Christ, Father God’s Holy Spirit keeps bringing me back to the Scriptures for strength and prayerful guidance in light of our present wars on planet earth. “The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s; but the earth He has given to the children of men” (Ps. 115:16).

The divinely inspired literary prophets and apostles of the Bible tell the story of the redemptive history of God’s covenant people on planet earth. It is one book with 66 chapters and one author, God’s Holy Spirit. Listen to a brief synthesis of this story in light of our present global tension and stress, particularly since the terrorist attack on America on September 11, 2001.

Moses wrote of the covenant God made with His friend Abraham. Abraham’s descendants would become great nations all over planet earth. This would include kings who would govern God’s covenant people beginning with a piece of real estate in the Mid-east known as Canaan (Gen. 17:8).

God fulfilled the promise to Abraham’s descendants through the leadership of Isaac, Jacob (Israel), and his descendants Moses and Joshua. God’s covenant leaders fought many wars in their obedience to “Jehovah” or “Yahweh’s” voice in order to see God’s promise fulfilled. These leaders were operating in faith and were not just biological descendants as leaders. Abraham and his spiritual descendants obeyed God and it was counted unto them as “righteous acts in covenantal living.” The just shall live by faith (Rom. 1:17; 2:28, 29; 4:16-22).

Scripture says, “Therefore know that only those who are of the faith are sons (daughters) of Abraham” (Galatians 3:7). God brought Jews and Gentiles into a covenant relationship with Himself through Abraham and His Seed, who is Jesus Christ of Nazareth (Gal. 3:16, 28, 29).

Today, the Spirit is speaking through God’s covenant people throughout planet earth. “Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other” (Isa. 45:22). God’s mercy and grace is extended to all who will humble themselves and receive His gift of everlasting life. Our Lord’s gracious words are very appropriate in our present global crisis, “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me, I will by no means cast out” (John 6:37). All who will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved to walk in covenant with the Creator today.

The key to righteous living in our postmodern world is to make our calling and election sure. Who and where God’s covenant people are today is, in my view, the cause of our global wars. The Lord requires that we all do what is just, love mercy, hate evil, and walk humbly with our covenant keeping Father God. May God’s mercy, grace, and peace rest upon all the people alive on planet earth today. The righteous judge of heaven and earth will do right. May our discernment of God’s will be right. My prayer is that military commanders President George W. Bush, Saddam Hussein, and Osama Bin Laden will all be aligned with the covenant keeping God of the Bible through Jesus Christ.
